Abilene Christian University

Abilene Christian University (ACU) stands as a vibrant private institution in West Texas, guided by its motto, "People With A Purpose." Since its founding in 1906, ACU has grown into a significant university with over 7,200 students, committed to integrating faith and learning under the leadership of President Phil Schubert and supported by an $0.8 billion endowment.

Originally established by the Churches of Christ as Childers Classical Institute, the university began with just 25 students. Its commitment to growth and identity was evident early on, formally adopting the name Abilene Christian College in 1920, a practice it had unofficially used since 1912. The university fostered a rich student life and intellectual environment from its early days, launching student publications like *The Optimist* (1912) and *The Prickly Pear* (1916), which continue to document its history.

ACU achieved crucial accreditation in 1951 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, solidifying its academic standing. Its reach expanded regionally, including the development of an extension campus that eventually became Amberton University. In a significant milestone, the institution formally became Abilene Christian University in 1976, marking its growth into a comprehensive university. More recently, ACU extended its graduate program offerings with the establishment of ACU Dallas in 2015, providing advanced degrees like an MBA and Ed.D. in organizational leadership.

While rooted in Christian tradition, ACU has also navigated social changes throughout its history. After operating as a segregated institution for decades, the university welcomed its first Black student in 1962. More recently, it has engaged with contemporary issues, recognizing an LGBT student association in 2016, even as certain policies regarding employee dating remain. ACU's journey reflects a commitment to academic excellence and purposeful living within an evolving social landscape.
