Adams State University, a public institution proudly proclaiming that "Great stories begin here," stands as a testament to accessible higher education in Colorado. With a vibrant community of 3,007 students, Adams State fosters an environment where diverse individuals can embark on their educational journeys and shape their own narratives.

Its rich history traces back to 1921 when it was founded as Adams State Normal School, thanks to the persistent efforts of Colorado legislator Billy Adams. The university's original mission was profound: to provide vital higher education opportunities for teachers from the remote and rural corners of Colorado, particularly the San Luis Valley, ensuring they could serve their local communities. This foundational commitment to underserved areas continues to influence its ethos. A notable early achievement was the graduation of Harriet Dalzell Hester in 1926, who went on to become the university's first librarian and an Alamosa County school superintendent, exemplifying the impact of an Adams State education.

Over the decades, Adams State evolved, expanding its academic offerings and reflecting this growth through name changes – becoming Adams State College in 1946 and finally Adams State University in 2012. While the university faced a period of probation from its accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, in 2016, it demonstrated its unwavering commitment to academic quality by successfully having the probation lifted and its accredited status fully restored in 2018.
