The roots of Albany Tech run deep, tracing back to the Monroe Area Vocational-Technical School, which first opened its doors in 1961 to a class of 175 ambitious students. This foundational institution laid the groundwork for technical education in the area. A significant milestone occurred in 1972 when it merged with Albany Area Vocational-Technical School, adopting the Albany name and establishing its campus at the current location, solidifying its presence as a key educational provider.

The institution further evolved in 1988, being renamed Albany Technical Institute and brought under the guidance of the newly formed Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). This period marked an expansion of its mission, charging Albany Tech with the crucial task of delivering technical education opportunities to residents, businesses, and industries across a broad seven-county service delivery area. Its growth culminated on July 6, 2000, when, in line with state legislation, it proudly became Albany Technical College.
