Allegany College of Maryland

Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) stands as a testament to progress and community empowerment, charting its course from a unique and historically significant beginning. The college commenced operations in 1961 as "Allegany Community College," notably starting within the walls of the former all-black Carver Community School. This move followed the integration of public schools in 1955, marking ACM's foundation as a pivotal moment in the region's educational landscape, initially serving 102 students from Allegany County.

Today, ACM has blossomed far beyond its humble beginnings. The college relocated to a sprawling 316-acre campus in suburban Cumberland in 1969, featuring modern facilities that have since expanded to include 15 buildings. This comprehensive environment is designed to support both credit and non-credit students, offering diverse learning opportunities. Students benefit from modern classrooms, specialized labs, and the convenience of on-site campus housing, fostering a vibrant and supportive college experience.

ACM's commitment to innovation and regional development is evident through its strategic partnerships and expansions. In 1990, the college extended its reach by opening the Bedford County Campus in Everett, Pennsylvania, providing college credit through the adjacent Bedford County Technical Center. Furthermore, ACM plays a crucial role in workforce development, establishing Western Maryland Works, a dynamic makerspace partnership, and constructing a state-of-the-art Western Regional Correctional Training Center. The college also demonstrated its dedication to cutting-edge education with a significant $13.6 million renovation of its Technology Building.

Serving a large and diverse student body, Allegany College of Maryland currently supports 3,418 credit students and registers over 6,900 participants in continuing education programs. With its rich history, expansive modern facilities, and a forward-thinking approach to education and community engagement, ACM continues to be a cornerstone for learning and professional growth in the region.
