Allegany College of Maryland

Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) stands as a testament to educational accessibility and community progress, deeply rooted in its impactful history. What began as a local community college has blossomed into a vital institution known for its diverse academic offerings, robust vocational training programs, and dedication to student success. Serving thousands of students annually, ACM is a cornerstone for personal and professional development in Western Maryland and beyond.

ACM's story is particularly significant, having commenced operations in 1961 within a former all-black Carver Community School – a powerful symbol of progress following the integration of public schools. This initial commitment to opening doors for 102 students from Allegany County under President Robert S. Zimmer set the stage for decades of growth. The college's major move in 1969 to its expansive Cumberland campus, partially funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission, marked a pivotal moment, allowing for significant expansion in credit programs and the introduction of crucial community service and continuing education courses.

Today, ACM offers a vibrant learning environment across its 15 modern buildings, catering to both credit and non-credit students. Beyond traditional academics, the college shines in its practical, career-focused education, exemplified by partnerships like Western Maryland Works, a makerspace established in 2018 to foster innovation and skills. The addition of the Western Regional Correctional Training Center in 2021 and a significant $13.6 million renovation of its Technology Building underscore ACM's commitment to cutting-edge facilities and relevant workforce development. With on-site campus housing and a comprehensive array of programs, ACM ensures a supportive and engaging experience for its over 3,400 credit students and 6,900 continuing education registrants.
