Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) stands as a beacon of accessible education and community empowerment in Western Maryland. ACM's history is deeply intertwined with the fabric of its community. Founded in 1961 as "Allegany Community College," it began operations in the former all-black Carver Community School, which closed following public school integration in 1955. This unique beginning laid the foundation for a college committed to opportunity for all. From its modest start with 102 students, ACM rapidly expanded, moving to a new 316-acre campus in Cumberland by 1969. This growth marked the start of its journey to become a cornerstone of education, offering a wide array of credit and non-credit programs.

Today, ACM serves a substantial student body, including 3,418 credit students and over 6,900 continuing education registrations, reflecting its broad appeal and impact. Students benefit from modern facilities across 15 buildings, including the recently renovated Technology Building, and have the convenience of on-site campus housing. The college is also a hub for innovation and workforce development, evidenced by its partnership in the Western Maryland Works makerspace and its Western Regional Correctional Training Center. With an additional campus in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, ACM is dedicated to providing relevant, high-quality education that prepares students for success in an ever-evolving world.
