About Alma College
Alma College: Embracing Scottish heritage and academic pursuit since 1887.
Nestled in Michigan, Alma College offers a vibrant educational experience deeply rooted in its rich history and unique traditions. While maintaining strong ties to its Presbyterian origins, the college warmly embraces students from all religious backgrounds, fostering a diverse and inclusive community. What truly sets Alma apart is its proud celebration of Scottish heritage, a tradition that has shaped its identity and spirit.
Alma College's journey began on October 26, 1886, when the Presbyterian Synod of Michigan accepted a generous offer from lumber magnate Ammi W. Wright, including thirty acres of land and two buildings. This significant foundation was further bolstered by a $50,000 gift from Alexander Folsom of Bay City. A state charter was granted on April 15, 1887, and classes officially commenced on September 12, 1887, with an initial enrollment of 95 students and nine dedicated faculty members, marking the start of a legacy dedicated to fostering learning and intellectual growth.
The college's distinctive Scottish identity truly blossomed in 1931 when "the Scots" was chosen as its mascot, replacing the "Fighting Presbyterians." This decision solidified Alma College's connection to Scotland, the ancestral home of the Presbyterian Church, and since then, Scottish traditions have been proudly woven into the fabric of campus life. This blend of historical depth, academic dedication, and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere makes Alma College a truly unique place to learn and grow.
