Founded in 1991 by Major James P. Etter (USMC, retired) as American Military University, this institution was specifically established to address the unique educational needs of military personnel. Its initial curriculum focused on specialized areas like counterterrorism and military intelligence, filling critical gaps not typically covered by traditional universities. The university rapidly embraced technological innovation, transitioning from conventional correspondence to offering its first online courses by 1998, and becoming fully online for all graduate programs by 2000.
