Andrew College

Andrew College, founded in 1854, stands as a testament to enduring education, historically pioneering higher learning for women and now evolving into a vibrant, co-educational private college. The college's journey is truly remarkable. Chartered in 1854 as Andrew Female College, it held the distinction of being the second oldest institution in the United States empowered to confer degrees upon women – a groundbreaking achievement for its time. Named after Bishop James Osgood Andrew, its resilience was tested during the American Civil War when it served as Hood Hospital, with female students even assisting the wounded. Despite a devastating fire in 1892, the community rallied, rebuilding and reopening the same year in the iconic Old Main building, a testament to unwavering commitment to education.

Andrew College has continually adapted to meet educational needs. It transitioned to a junior college in 1917 and became fully co-educational in 1956, broadening its reach and impact. Most recently, in 2018, Andrew College recommitted to comprehensive undergraduate education by once again offering baccalaureate degrees, marking an exciting new chapter.
