Andrew College

Andrew College stands as a beacon of educational resilience and pioneering spirit, famously holding the second oldest charter in the United States to grant degrees to women. Founded in 1854, this private institution, guided by its Latin motto 'Lux et Scientia' (Light & Knowledge), has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of its students. With a close-knit community of 602 students, Andrew College offers a uniquely supportive environment where individual growth is paramount.

Its history is marked by profound significance and unwavering determination. Chartered as Andrew Female College, it broke ground in women's higher education. During the tumultuous American Civil War, its campus transformed into Hood Hospital, yet classes remarkably continued on a limited basis, with female students aiding the wounded – a testament to its enduring commitment. Even after a devastating fire consumed the campus in 1892, the community rallied, swiftly rebuilding the iconic five-story Victorian Old Main, designed by renowned architect William H. Parkins, in a remarkable display of collective resolve for $25,000.

Over the decades, Andrew College has evolved, becoming a junior college in 1917 and opening its doors to men in 1956, transitioning to a co-educational institution. This spirit of innovation continues today, as the college proudly reintroduced baccalaureate degrees in 2018, expanding opportunities for its students to pursue comprehensive four-year programs.
