Andrew College

Andrew College stands as a beacon of educational heritage, with a storied past deeply intertwined with the advancement of women's education in the United States. Founded in 1854, it proudly holds the distinction of having the second oldest charter in the nation allowing an institution to confer degrees upon women. This private college, named after Bishop James Osgood Andrew, has consistently evolved, adapting to the changing educational landscape while upholding its motto, "Lux et Scientia" (Light & Knowledge). Today, with a vibrant community of 602 students, Andrew College is not just a place of learning; it's a testament to enduring educational innovation.

The college's history is rich with pivotal moments. During the tumultuous American Civil War in 1864, its campus was requisitioned by the Confederate Army, transforming into Hood Hospital. Despite this, classes remarkably continued on a limited basis, with female students actively contributing to the war effort by assisting the wounded. Even after a devastating fire consumed the campus in 1892, the resilient community of Cuthbert rallied, raising funds to rebuild, culminating in the magnificent Old Main building—a five-story Victorian masterpiece designed by Atlanta's renowned architect, William H. Parkins.

Andrew College further diversified its offerings over the decades, transitioning to a junior college in 1917 and opening its doors to male students, becoming co-educational in 1956. This progressive spirit continued into the modern era, as the college once again began offering baccalaureate degrees in 2018, reaffirming its commitment to comprehensive higher education. Under the leadership of current president Dr. William R. Kennedy, who has served since June 2023, Andrew College continues its legacy of providing a robust and engaging educational experience, preparing students for future success with a foundation rooted in its rich history and forward-thinking vision.
