The history of AVCCD is a remarkable tale of resilience and growth. Established just before the Great Depression, the college faced one of its greatest challenges during World War II, when attendance plummeted to a mere 13 students – the same number as its founding year. Despite immense pressure to close, dedicated trustees and staff courageously held fast, believing in the college's vital role. Their perseverance paid off, as enrollment surged in the post-war era, fueled by the transformative GI Bill of Rights and the burgeoning local aircraft industry.

This period of expansion wasn't just in student numbers; it was also in physical presence. In 1959, a significant milestone was reached with the groundbreaking for a brand-new, dedicated campus designed by architect Henry L. Gogerty. Originally spanning 110 acres, this modern home for learning has since expanded to approximately 135 acres, reflecting AVCCD's continuous growth and commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities.
