App State's rich history dates back to 1899, when brothers B.B. and D.D. Dougherty, alongside D.D.'s wife Lillie Shull Dougherty, established Watauga Academy to train teachers for northwestern North Carolina. This pioneering spirit led to state recognition in 1903 as the Appalachian Training School for Teachers. Through various transformations—from a Normal School to a Teachers College—the institution steadily expanded its mission. By 1967, it proudly became Appalachian State University, reflecting its evolution into a multi-purpose regional hub of learning, and joined the University of North Carolina System in 1972.
