Athenaeum of Ohio

The Athenaeum of Ohio stands as a venerable private Catholic seminary, a cornerstone of spiritual and academic formation in the region. With a focused community of 225 students, it is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Catholic leaders, including priests, deacons, and lay ministers, under the guidance of President Anthony R. Tracing its origins back to 1829, the Athenaeum boasts a rich and transformative history. It began with Bishop Fenwick's establishment of St. Francis Xavier Seminary in Cincinnati. Just two years later, Bishop Fenwick expanded his vision by founding the Athenaeum itself, initially catering to the education of lay students. This early innovation laid the groundwork for a broader educational mission that would profoundly impact the Cincinnati area.

A significant chapter unfolded in 1840 when the Jesuits assumed leadership of the Athenaeum, subsequently renaming it St. Xavier College.
