The institution's rich history dates back to 1829 when Bishop Fenwick established St. Francis Xavier Seminary. This early foundation quickly expanded, with the Athenaeum itself being founded just two years later to provide education for lay students. A pivotal moment in its early development came in 1840 when the Jesuits assumed operation, renaming it St. Xavier College, marking a significant chapter in its evolution.
