Athens State University

Athens State University stands as a cornerstone of higher education in Alabama, distinguished not only as the state's oldest educational institution but also by its unique mission. It is the only university in Alabama exclusively dedicated to serving transfer students, providing a focused pathway for those who have completed junior, community, and technical college programs to achieve their bachelor's degrees. With a student body of around 3,500, Athens State offers a welcoming and specialized environment for degree completion.

The university's rich history dates back to 1822 when it first opened its doors as the Athens Female Academy. Over the decades, it evolved significantly, coming under the oversight of the Methodist Church in 1842 and transforming into the Athens Female Institute, later Athens Female College. A pivotal moment arrived in 1931 when it became coeducational, adopting the name Athens College. This long legacy of adaptation and growth laid the foundation for its modern identity.

In the mid-1970s, Athens College made a momentous transition, affiliating with the State of Alabama and becoming a state institution in 1975. This move solidified its commitment to public service, focusing on the critical role of enabling transfer students to complete their degrees. Rebranded as Athens State University in 1998, and gaining an autonomous board of trustees in 2012, the university continues its legacy of providing accessible and high-quality upper-division education, shaping future leaders and professionals across the state.
