The college's journey began in 1965, when the University System of Georgia recognized the need for a junior college to serve the rapidly growing Atlanta region. After years of planning and construction, the institution opened its doors in September 1974 as Atlanta Junior College, welcoming an inaugural class of 504 students. Over the decades, AMSC has evolved to meet the changing needs of its students and the workforce. A pivotal moment arrived in 2012 when the college began offering four-year degree programs, signaling its growth and enhanced academic offerings. This expansion was recognized with a new name, Atlanta Metropolitan State College, reflecting its expanded mission and comprehensive educational opportunities.
