The college's rich history began in 1945, emerging from the post-World War II era as the Smith-Hughes Vocational School. From its renaming as Hoke Smith Technical Institute in 1964, to Atlanta Area Technical School in 1967 when it moved to its current campus, and eventually becoming Atlanta Technical College in 2000, ATC has consistently championed vocational and technical education, building a legacy of skill development and community service.
