About Aurora University
Aurora University: Where a rich history of liberal arts tradition meets modern academic breadth.
Aurora University offers a compelling blend of tradition and innovation for today's students. Evolving from its roots as Mendota Seminary in 1893, Aurora has grown into a vibrant private university committed to a broad liberal arts curriculum. Students benefit from an institution that has continually adapted and expanded, moving from its original Mendota location to Aurora, Illinois, and embracing new academic programs.
Originally founded with a focus on education rooted in the Advent Christian Church, the institution quickly broadened its scope to a traditional liberal arts curriculum as Mendota College. The pivotal move to Aurora in 1911, spurred by community support, marked its transformation into Aurora College. This spirit of community and growth continues to define the university, which formally became Aurora University in 1985, reflecting the expanded depth and breadth of its academic offerings.
Today, Aurora University stands as a testament to enduring educational values combined with forward-thinking programs. With a student body of over 6,000, it provides a supportive environment where individuals can explore diverse fields of study. The university's journey includes significant milestones like its separation from the Advent Christian Church in 1971 and its merger with George Williams College, all contributing to a rich academic tapestry and a dynamic student experience under current President Susana Rivera-Mills.
