Austin Community College District (ACC) stands as a dynamic hub of learning in Central Texas, dedicated to its inspiring motto: "Start Here. Get There." The journey to establishing ACC was marked by perseverance and community vision. After multiple proposals for a taxpayer-supported college were rejected in the 1960s, a breakthrough occurred in 1972 when voters approved an alternative plan. This allowed the new college to operate under the Austin Independent School District, relying on state bodies and student tuition rather than local taxes. This initial structure paved the way for its official founding in 1973 and its subsequent accreditation by SACS in 1978, solidifying its commitment to quality education.

As ACC's student population rapidly expanded, so did its need for greater resources. This led to a significant shift in its governance. After an initial setback in 1981, a similar measure was successfully enacted in 1986, separating ACC from AISD. This pivotal moment established ACC as an independent, county-wide public college with its own governing board and taxing authority, empowering it to fund facility expansions and better serve its growing student body.
