Bacone College

Bacone College stands as a historically significant institution with deep ties to Indigenous education in Oklahoma. Founded in 1880, with roots tracing back to 1867, it has long been a place of value and opportunity, committed to nurturing the academic and personal growth of its students, particularly those from Native American communities. With a motto that reflects its enduring mission, Bacone provides a unique educational environment focused on a holistic approach to learning.

Its history is a testament to resilience and dedication. What began as a Baptist mission school, championed by missionary Almon C. Bacone, evolved from a small seminary-level institution into a comprehensive college. Moving to Muskogee, then the capital of the Creek Nation and informally known as the "Indian Capital of the World," Bacone College positioned itself at the heart of Indigenous communities, continuously adapting to meet the educational needs of Native American students.

In recent years, Bacone College has demonstrated remarkable fortitude. Facing severe financial difficulties, a consortium of Oklahoma tribal nations — including the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Cheyenne and Arapaho, and Kiowa Tribes — rallied to support the college. This collaboration underscores Bacone's crucial role in Indigenous education, aiming to revive its legacy as a tribal college. Although not officially recognized by the BIA as a tribal college, it is now categorized as an Indigenous-serving institution, continuing its vital work.

With a close-knit student body of 270, Bacone College offers an intimate educational experience where individual growth is prioritized.
