The college's journey began in 1917 as the Kansas Central Bible Training School, founded by evangelist Scott T. Clark. Over the decades, it evolved, first by adding a junior college course in 1925 and then rebranding as Friends Bible College in 1930, reflecting its expanding vision. A significant turning point came in 1968 when the institution committed fully to becoming a four-year college, leading to the closure of its high school program and a dedicated effort to enhance its academic and facility offerings.

This commitment to excellence was formally recognized in 1975 with full accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education. In a move that honored its theological roots, the college adopted its current name, Barclay College, in 1990, paying tribute to Robert Barclay, the influential first Quaker theologian.
