Barry University

Barry University, a private institution nestled in Miami Shores, Florida, boasts a truly distinctive beginning. It was founded in 1940 as Barry College for Women through the shared vision of siblings: Bishop Patrick Barry and his sister, Mother Mary Gerald Barry, OP. This collaborative spirit transformed a "tract of tropical vegetation" into a thriving educational hub, laying the groundwork for what would become a comprehensive university in a prime South Florida location.

Over the decades, Barry University has evolved significantly. Mother Mary Gerald Barry, OP, led the institution as president from its inception until 1961, guiding its foundational years. The college officially transitioned to Barry University on November 13, 1981, expanding its reach and academic offerings. Today, it remains proudly sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan, reflecting a deep-rooted commitment to its founding principles and community engagement.
