The university's origins trace back to 1940 when it was established as Barry College for Women by an extraordinary pair of siblings: Bishop Patrick Barry and his sister, Mother Mary Gerald Barry, OP, then prioress of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. What began as a transformative vision on a tract of tropical vegetation soon blossomed into a thriving main campus. Mother Barry herself served as president for over two decades, guiding the institution through its formative years and setting the foundation for its enduring mission. This unique sister-brother founding story underscores the deep commitment to education and service that continues to define the university.

Evolving from its initial identity, Barry College officially became Barry University on November 13, 1981, marking a significant milestone in its journey. While an independent 501(c)(3) organization with its own board of trustees, the university proudly maintains its sponsorship by the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan, ensuring its core values remain at the heart of its operations. Today, under the leadership of President Mike Allen, Barry University stands as a testament to its enduring mission, offering a wide array of programs designed to empower students for success in a rapidly changing world.
