The university's origins are particularly compelling, founded as Barry College for Women by the remarkable sibling duo of Bishop Patrick Barry and his sister, Mary Gerald Barry, OP, who was then the prioress of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. What began as a "tract of tropical vegetation" was transformed through their vision into a thriving main campus, initially comprising five foundational buildings that set the stage for decades of academic growth.

Evolving significantly over the years, Barry College proudly became Barry University on November 13, 1981, expanding its reach and offerings while maintaining its core values.
