Bastyr University

Bastyr University, established in 1978, stands as a pioneering institution dedicated to natural medicine and holistic health education. Founded as the John Bastyr College of Naturopathic Medicine in Seattle, the university quickly grew, becoming Bastyr College in 1984 and Bastyr University in 1994. A significant milestone occurred in 1996 when Bastyr relocated to its serene 51-acre campus in Kenmore, Washington, set within the former St. Edward Seminary and surrounded by the natural beauty of Saint Edward State Park. This move cemented its status as the first accredited university of natural medicine and the first center for alternative medicine research funded by the National Institutes of Health's Office of Alternative Medicine.

Bastyr is renowned for its diverse offerings, including baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees, such as the Master of Science in direct-entry midwifery after merging with Seattle Midwifery School in 2010. While recognized for its distinct approach, it's important for prospective students to understand that Bastyr's programs, while overseen by a naturopathic council, are not accredited as conventional medical schools.
