Bates Technical College

The college's rich history began humbly in 1940, launching as a technical education program in the basement of Hawthorne Elementary School. It quickly grew, officially becoming the Tacoma Vocational School by 1942. A pivotal moment arrived with LaVerne Hazen Bates (L. H. Bates) taking the director's helm in 1944, whose visionary leadership led to its renaming as the Tacoma Vocational-Technical Institute. His profound impact was honored posthumously when, after his retirement in 1969, the institution was named the L. H. Bates Vocational Technical Institute.

The institution underwent another significant transformation in 1991, separating from local school districts to come under the wider umbrella of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, solidifying its role as a key player in Washington's higher education landscape. This independence further empowered Bates to innovate and expand its offerings, ensuring its programs remain highly relevant to industry needs.
