Over the decades, it evolved significantly, adopting its present name in 1913, embracing coeducation in 1972, and merging with Sacred Heart College in 1987, expanding its academic and campus footprint. Early on, Belmont Abbey showed a forward-thinking spirit, notably conferring an honorary degree on Protestant evangelist Billy Graham in 1967, a bold ecumenical gesture for its time.
