Bemidji State University

Bemidji State University, a public institution founded in 1919, offers a dynamic educational experience rooted in nearly a century of tradition. Nestled in a vibrant northern Minnesota setting, BSU is known for its commitment to student success and its evolution from a normal school to a comprehensive university, adapting to the changing needs of learners and the state.

The university's journey began as the "Bemidji State Normal School" with a modest first class of 38 students, led by its inaugural president, Manfred Deputy. Over the decades, it evolved, becoming "Bemidji State Teachers College" in 1921, then "Bemidji State College" in 1957, and finally adopting its current identity as "Bemidji State University" in 1975. This history reflects its enduring dedication to education and growth, even resisting a proposed name change in 1998-99 to preserve its unique legacy.

Today, under the leadership of President John Hoffman, Bemidji State University serves a thriving student body of 6,354.
