Benedict College

Benedict College stands as a beacon of educational opportunity, founded in 1870 with a profound mission to prepare men and women as "powers for good in society." As a private historically black college, Benedict has steadfastly upheld its motto, fostering an environment where students can thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities. The institution began as Benedict Institute, opening its doors to ten freedmen under the guidance of Reverend Timothy Dodge. Initially focusing on foundational literacy and religious studies, the curriculum swiftly expanded to meet the critical need for trained teachers and preachers among the African-American population. By 1894, it was chartered as a four-year liberal arts college, marking its evolution into a comprehensive educational powerhouse. A significant milestone occurred in 1930 with the appointment of Reverend John J. Starks, a Benedict alumnus, as the college's first African-American president, signaling a new era of self-determination and leadership.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries have seen remarkable growth and strategic development at Benedict College. With a clear vision, the college successfully achieved its "2000 by the year 2000" enrollment goal two years ahead of schedule, reaching 2,138 students in 1996, and further expanding to 3,000 students by 2002. This growth is complemented by an ambitious $50 million campus improvement plan, which includes significant land acquisition and the development of a state-of-the-art athletics complex, ensuring modern facilities for its expanding student body.

Recent improvements include comprehensive upgrades to residence halls with new air-conditioning, fire sprinkler systems, and enhanced security. New constructions like additional residence halls, a parking garage, a modern campus center/dining hall, and a Business Development Center reflect the college's commitment to student comfort and academic resources. Beyond the campus, Benedict College actively contributes to its surrounding community in Columbia, having renovated over 50 rundown properties, embodying its enduring mission to be a "power for good in society."
