Benedict College

Benedict College stands as a beacon of education and empowerment, proudly upholding its motto, "A Power for Good in Society." Founded in 1870, this private historically black college (HBCU) began with a powerful mission: to provide education to freedmen and women who were previously denied the opportunity to learn. From its earliest days, holding classes in a former plantation's "Big House," Benedict has been dedicated to preparing individuals for impactful roles, initially focusing on training teachers and preachers.

Its history is a testament to resilience and progress. What began as Benedict Institute evolved into a four-year liberal arts college, chartered by the South Carolina legislature in 1894. For decades, it thrived under the leadership of dedicated individuals, eventually seeing its first African-American president, Reverend John J. Starks, take the helm in 1930 – a pivotal moment in its journey. Today, under the leadership of President Roslyn Clark Artis, Benedict College continues to build on this rich legacy, fostering an environment where students are equipped for leadership and service.

The institution has demonstrated remarkable growth, exceeding its "2000 by the year 2000" enrollment goal in 1996 and reaching 3,000 students by 2002. This growth is matched by a significant commitment to enhancing the student experience and campus environment, evidenced by an ongoing $50 million campus improvement plan. This ambitious project includes modernizing residence halls, constructing new facilities like a campus center and Administration Building, and developing a comprehensive athletics complex.

As part of its broader development goals, the college has actively renovated over 50 rundown properties in the adjacent Columbia neighborhood.
