Berkshire Community College

Berkshire Community College (BCC) stands as a landmark institution, distinguished as the first publicly funded community college in Massachusetts. Since its founding on September 15, 1960, BCC has been dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality education to the residents of the Berkshire region, fostering growth and opportunity.

From its initial campus in the Old Central High School with 153 students, BCC rapidly expanded, growing to 1,222 students within its first eleven years and moving to its current Pittsfield campus in 1972. The college has consistently embraced innovation in education, expanding classes to southern Berkshire County in the 1980s with its South County Center, and pioneering "teleclassroom" courses and online learning through its website in the 1990s and early 2000s. Its partnership with Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) allows students to access associate, baccalaureate, and even an MBA program through a jointly operated satellite campus.

Beyond traditional degrees, BCC is home to the unique Berkshire Institute of Lifelong Learning (BIIL), a highly regarded adult education program. BIIL is one of only four such programs in the nation affiliated with a two-year college, a testament to BCC's innovative approach to community engagement and continuous learning. Its significance was further underscored by a $1 million endowment gift received in 2010, ensuring its perpetuation. BCC offers a supportive and dynamic environment for a diverse student body, preparing them for transfer to four-year institutions or direct entry into the workforce.
