Berkshire Community College

Berkshire Community College (BCC) stands as a landmark institution, distinguished as the first publicly funded community college in Massachusetts. Since its opening on September 15, 1960, BCC has been a beacon of accessible education, growing from a modest 153 students to a thriving community that moved to its modern West Street campus in 1972. BCC is renowned for its innovative approach to education, continually expanding access for its students. In the 1980s, the college extended its reach with classes in southern Berkshire County, culminating in the establishment of the South County Center in Great Barrington. Further demonstrating its forward-thinking mindset, BCC embraced digital learning early on, launching "teleclassroom" courses and offering online programs through its website in the 1990s and early 2000s, ensuring education remains flexible and available.

Academically, BCC offers a robust foundation for various pathways. Through a unique collaboration, BCC and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts jointly operate a satellite campus at the Silvio O. Conte Federal Building in Pittsfield. This partnership provides students with access to associate, baccalaureate, and even an MBA program through MCLA, alongside valuable workforce skills assessment and development programs. One of its most distinctive features is the Berkshire Institute of Lifelong Learning, affiliated with the nationwide Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. This program, one of only four in the nation affiliated with a two-year college, received a significant $1 million endowment in 2010, cementing BCC's dedication to lifelong education for all ages.
