The college's rich history began with its authorization in 1961, quickly opening its first classes in 1962. Overcoming initial challenges like a steelworkers' strike, BBCC rapidly expanded, moving into its own facility by late 1963. A significant milestone came in 1966 with the acquisition of a 159-acre tract on the former Larson Air Force Base, which later became its comprehensive north campus. This strategic growth allowed BBCC to consolidate its operations and strengthen its presence as a vital educational institution for the region.

Today, Big Bend Community College serves as District 18 of the state community college system, covering a vast 4,600-square-mile district that includes Grant and Adams counties, along with the Odessa School district.
