Bishop State Community College

Bishop State Community College stands as a proud public historically black community college in Mobile, Alabama, currently led by President Olivier Charles. Its rich history dates back to 1927, when it began as the Mobile extension of Alabama State College, initially serving to uplift African-American certified teachers. This foundational dedication to educational equity continued through its evolution, becoming a two-year college in 1936 as Alabama State College - Mobile Center, and later gaining independence in 1965 as Mobile State Junior College. In a fitting tribute, it was renamed S.D. Bishop State Junior College in 1971 after its first president, Dr. Sanford D. Bishop, before finally becoming Bishop State Community College in 1989, reflecting its broad academic and community impact.
