Blue Mountain Christian University

Blue Mountain Christian University stands as a testament to evolving educational landscapes, beginning its journey as a pioneering institution dedicated to women's education and transforming into a coeducational university with a strong Christian mission. Originally founded in 1873 by Confederate Brigadier-General Mark Perrin Lowrey, a pastor known as "a preacher general," the institution has a rich and unique history deeply intertwined with its Baptist roots and a commitment to faith-based learning.

What began as Blue Mountain Female Institute with just 50 students and a faculty comprising Lowrey and his two daughters, quickly grew, officially chartered by Mississippi in 1877. For decades, leadership remained within the Lowrey family, with General Lowrey, his sons, and grandson serving as the first four presidents, shaping its foundational values. This lineage eventually transitioned in 1920 when the Lowrey Family entrusted the college to the Mississippi Baptist Convention, solidifying its denominational ties.

The university's commitment to adapting to the needs of its community is evident in its progression from an exclusively women's college. While maintaining its focus on female education for many years, a program to train men for church-related vocations was introduced in 1956, marking the first step towards broader inclusion. By October 2005, the board of trustees voted for the school to become fully coeducational, opening its doors to all students. Most recently, in November 2022, the institution proudly embraced its new identity as Blue Mountain Christian University, reflecting its comprehensive offerings and emphasizing its core Christian mission to prospective students and families seeking a faith-centered academic experience.
