Blue Mountain Christian University

Blue Mountain Christian University, formerly Blue Mountain College, stands as a testament to evolving educational vision and unwavering Christian principles. Recently renamed in November 2022, this institution proudly highlights its robust Christian identity and university-level academic offerings, distinguishing itself from two-year community colleges and affirming its comprehensive mission. Its rich history traces back to 1873, when it was founded as Blue Mountain Female Institute by Confederate Brigadier-General Mark Perrin Lowrey, a remarkable pastor known as a 'preacher general.' Starting with just 50 students and a faculty comprised of Lowrey and his two daughters, the college was officially chartered in 1877. For many decades, leadership remained within the Lowrey family, shaping the institution's early character and educational philosophy, which emphasized women's education and spiritual formation.

A pivotal shift occurred in 1920 when the Lowrey family transitioned ownership to the Mississippi Baptist Convention, solidifying its denominational ties. While initially dedicated to women's education, the college began a program to train men for church-related vocations in 1956. A significant milestone for student experience and academic expansion was reached in October 2005 when the board of trustees voted to make the school fully coeducational. Today, Blue Mountain Christian University continues to serve a diverse student body, building on its heritage while preparing students for lives of purpose and service.
