Bluefield State University

Bluefield State University, a vibrant public historically black university (HBCU) founded in 1895, stands as a testament to perseverance and progress in higher education. Originally established as the Bluefield Colored Institute to provide high-grade schooling for African Americans during an era of segregation, BSU has continually adapted to meet the needs of its students and the community. Today, it embraces its motto, "Accept The Challenge," by fostering an inclusive and forward-thinking environment where students are prepared to thrive.

The university's journey is rich with significant milestones and periods of transformation. From its humble beginnings with Principal Hamilton Hatter overseeing 40 pupils, to becoming a normal school for teacher training, and later evolving into a comprehensive college, Bluefield State has always been a beacon of learning. Despite facing challenges, including a difficult transition in the 1960s with the permanent closure of its dormitories, the institution demonstrated remarkable resilience. Its strong academic programs, especially in fields like engineering and nursing, have long been pillars of its educational offerings.

In recent years, Bluefield State has embarked on an exciting new chapter of growth and revitalization. Recognizing the importance of a holistic student experience, the university began its return to a residential campus in 2019, with new residence halls and the acquisition of the former Bluefield Regional Medical Center, adding significant acreage and modern living facilities. This expansion has cultivated a dynamic campus life for its 1,301 students. The most recent evolution to Bluefield State University in 2022, accompanied by the launch of its first Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, signals its continued commitment to expanding academic horizons and preparing students for advanced professional roles in an engaging and supportive university setting.
