Bluefield State University

Bluefield State University, a public Historically Black University (HBCU) founded in 1895, stands as a testament to educational resilience and adaptation. Initially established as the Bluefield Colored Institute to provide a "high-graded school" education for African Americans in West Virginia, it has continuously evolved to meet the needs of its students. Its deep roots in providing access to education during a time of segregation mark its profound historical significance within the state and beyond.

Over its history, the institution transitioned from an institute to a normal school for teacher training, then to Bluefield State Teachers College, and eventually Bluefield State College. While overcoming the challenges of segregation, the college faced new tensions in the 1960s. A pivotal event in 1968 led to the permanent closure of its dormitories, accelerating its transition to a predominantly commuter college. Further changes in 2003 saw the transfer of many two-year programs, significantly impacting enrollment and prompting occasional calls for merger.

Despite these historical shifts and challenges, Bluefield State has consistently demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence. Today, it is recognized for its strong programs in engineering and nursing, and in 2022, it achieved university status by launching its first master's degree, a Master of Business Administration.
