About Brazosport College
Brazosport College: A community college offering unique baccalaureate opportunities in Texas.
Brazosport College, proudly known as "The College of Choice," is a dynamic public community college in Texas dedicated to student success. With an enrollment of 3,829 students, it stands out for its unique ability to offer baccalaureate degrees, a rare distinction for a community college. Under the leadership of President Dr. Vincent R. Solis, the institution provides a vital pathway to higher education and career readiness within its community.
The college's journey began in 1948 when voters approved its creation, though it didn't open its doors until 1968 as Brazosport Junior College with an initial class of 868 students. Rapidly evolving, it graduated its first 25 students in 1970, the same year it was renamed Brazosport College to reflect its broader educational aspirations. A pivotal moment arrived in 2003 when Texas Governor Rick Perry signed legislation allowing Brazosport College, among others, to offer bachelor's degrees, culminating in its accreditation in 2004 and the launch of its Bachelor of Applied Technology program in 2005.
Academically strong, Brazosport College expanded its baccalaureate offerings in 2014 with a Health Management Services major, demonstrating its commitment to relevant, career-focused education. Its dedication to serving minority communities was notably recognized in 2021 with a substantial $3 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Despite facing a proposed closure in 2011, the college rallied and remains a cornerstone of educational opportunity, fostering a supportive environment where students can achieve their academic and professional goals.
