The name "Brevard" itself honors Ephraim Brevard, a local leader and a figure in the 1775 Mecklenburg Resolves, linking the college to foundational American history.
The decisive moment arrived in 1933 when the Western North Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Church decided to merge Weaver and Rutherford Colleges, establishing a single coeducational Methodist Junior college on the site of the former Brevard Institute. This ambitious merger came to fruition in the fall of 1934, with 24 faculty members and 394 students, including 30 students and five faculty from Weaver, making the move to the new location. This pioneering spirit of collaboration and growth defines the initial student experience and the community ethos of Brevard College.
