The university's journey began in 1929, co-founded by Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke and Bishop Edmond Heelan, driven by the vision of establishing a Catholic women's college in Sioux City. Officially dedicated in 1930, Briar Cliff opened its doors to 25 pioneering women in Heelan Hall. Over the decades, it expanded its academic offerings, transforming its two-year program into a four-year curriculum by 1937. A pivotal moment arrived in the mid-1960s with the admission of men, formally establishing co-education and significantly broadening the student experience and campus life, marked by the addition of facilities like Toller, Noonan Hall, and the Newman Flanagan Center.

The institution officially became a university in 2001, coinciding with the implementation of new Master's programs, further enhancing its graduate-level education.
