Briar Cliff University

Step into the rich history of Briar Cliff University, a Catholic institution with a legacy of growth and adaptation. Founded in 1930 as Briar Cliff College by Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke and Bishop Edmond Heelan, it began as a dedicated women's college, nurtured by the Sisters of Saint Francis of the Holy Family. The university's strong community ties were evident from its inception, with the Sioux City community committing significant support to establish this vital educational landmark.

Initially offering a two-year program to 25 pioneering women, Briar Cliff quickly expanded its academic horizons, becoming a four-year institution by 1937. A pivotal moment arrived in the mid-1960s when the college embraced co-education, formally welcoming 150 full-time male students in 1966. This transformative period also saw the expansion of campus facilities, including new residence halls and the Newman Flanagan Center, enhancing the student experience and fostering a vibrant campus life.

The 21st century marked another era of significant advancement for Briar Cliff. The institution officially transitioned to Briar Cliff University on June 1, 2001, coinciding with the launch of new Master's programs. Further demonstrating its commitment to accessible and advanced education, online courses were introduced in 2006, and the university unveiled its first doctoral degree, the Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner, in 2013. Today, Briar Cliff continues to be a hub of academic innovation, supported by active centers like the Center for Siouxland Research, ensuring a dynamic and forward-thinking educational environment for all students.
