The university’s journey began in 1895 as the Eugene Divinity School (EDS), founded by preacher and educator Eugene Claremont Sanderson. His innovative approach envisioned students focusing on biblical studies at EDS while pursuing other academic subjects at the neighboring University of Oregon. This unique and long-standing academic partnership, a hallmark of its early history, facilitated a broad educational experience, demonstrating the institution's commitment to comprehensive learning that extended beyond theological studies for nearly a century, until its discontinuation in 1995.

Over the decades, the institution embraced several name changes, each reflecting its growth and expanded mission. From Eugene Bible University in 1908, to Eugene Bible College in 1930, and then Northwest Christian College after a merger in 1934, it consistently adapted to serve its student body. The transition to Northwest Christian University in 2008 further underscored its evolving academic scope. In 2020, it formally adopted the name Bushnell University, honoring James A. Bushnell, the first chairman of its board of trustees, marking a new chapter in its distinguished history. Today, under the leadership of its 10th president, Joseph Womack, Bushnell University continues to inspire and educate, building on a foundation laid over a century ago.
