About California Institute of the Arts
CalArts: Where artistic pioneers are forged through interdisciplinary exploration.
California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) stands as a beacon for aspiring artists seeking an unconventional and interdisciplinary education. Founded by none other than Walt Disney, it emerged from the ambitious vision to create a destination for cutting-edge artistic development. Known globally for its innovative programs, including acclaimed Character Animation and Jazz studies, CalArts cultivates a vibrant counterculture spirit and avant-garde approach to the arts.
The institute's rich history began in 1961, a merger born from the financial challenges facing the Chouinard Art Institute (founded 1921) and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (founded 1883). Walt Disney, a lifelong supporter and patron who trained many of his studio's artists at these schools, spearheaded the merger alongside his brother Roy O. Disney and other dedicated founders. Their goal was to establish a feeder school for the burgeoning arts industries, a "destination" like Disneyland itself, culminating in the groundbreaking of its Valencia campus in 1969 and its official opening in 1971.
CalArts quickly established itself with influential faculty from avant-garde backgrounds, fostering an environment of experimental exploration. Despite early financial instability and challenges like the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake and the 1994 Northridge Earthquake which necessitated resourceful adaptations like holding classes in party tents, the institute stabilized and expanded its unique offerings. Today, students benefit from a commitment to interdisciplinary learning, supported by experimental laboratories such as the CHANEL Center for Artists and Technology, the Center for Integrated Media, and the Cotsen Center for Puppetry, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression across various disciplines.
