California State University Maritime Academy, often simply known as Cal Maritime, stands as a beacon for aspiring maritime professionals. As the only public maritime college on the West Coast, it offers a distinct, hands-on education tailored to prepare students for leadership roles in the global maritime industry. With a tight-knit community of 804 students, Cal Maritime provides an intimate and focused learning environment, unlike any other.

Established in 1929 as the California Nautical School, its journey reflects a profound evolution from a humble trade school to a respected four-year institution. Early cadets and instructors lived aboard training vessels, embodying resilience during the Great Depression. The academy officially joined the distinguished California State University system in 1995, solidifying its place as a comprehensive university. More recently, in a significant shift, it integrated with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in July 2025, becoming the Cal Poly, Solano Campus and Cal Poly Maritime Academy.

Cal Maritime's academic strength lies in its practical and theoretical instruction, designed to forge officers for the American Merchant Marine. Graduates earn Bachelor of Science degrees and are equipped with expertise in navigation, seamanship, and marine engineering. The unique curriculum is heavily reliant on experiential learning, prominently featuring time spent on the training vessel T.S.
