California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) stands as a unique gem within the California State University system, dedicated to molding the next generation of leaders for the American Merchant Marine and related industries. Tracing its roots back to the California Nautical School established in 1929, Cal Maritime has a rich history marked by resilience and evolution. From its early days struggling through the Great Depression, to becoming a four-year institution granting Bachelor of Science degrees, it has consistently adapted to serve its critical mission. The academy was also a pioneer, graduating its first minority and female cadets in the 1970s, reflecting its enduring commitment to opportunity.

Joining the California State University system in 1995 significantly bolstered its standing, allowing it to thrive as a distinctive public maritime college. Its dedication to a specialized, rigorous education, overseen by a president commissioned as a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Maritime Service, ensures a truly unique leadership development experience for its 804 students.

In a significant recent development, Cal Maritime integrated with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, in July 2025. This integration means that while the land-based campus is now known as "Cal Poly, Solano Campus," the storied sea-based education continues under the new designation "Cal Poly Maritime Academy," promising an exciting future for this historically significant institution.
