Cameron University

Cameron University stands as a cornerstone of higher education in southwest Oklahoma, boasting a rich history that mirrors the growth of the state itself. Established in 1908, just a year after Oklahoma achieved statehood, it began as an agricultural high school before steadily evolving to meet the region's diverse educational needs. Today, Cameron is a vibrant public university serving nearly 3,700 students, offering a comprehensive array of baccalaureate and master's degree programs.

From its humble beginnings in a bank basement, Cameron quickly grew, adding junior college classes in 1927 and transforming into a full-fledged junior college by 1941. A pivotal moment arrived in 1966 when the Legislature authorized the institution to award bachelor's degrees, solidifying its role as a key academic player. The university continued its upward trajectory, officially becoming Cameron University in 1974 and significantly expanding its academic offerings, including the construction of a dedicated fine arts facility for theatre, music, broadcasting, and speech communication students.

Cameron further cemented its academic prowess in 1988, when it was granted the authority to offer master's degrees — a significant development for an Oklahoma institution at the time.
