Canada College's roots are deeply entwined with the progressive vision of the San Mateo Junior College District. Its inception was part of an ambitious 25-year master plan, fueled by robust community support through significant bond issues in 1957 and 1964. The college's development was meticulously planned from 1964 to 1966, designed to initially accommodate 2,000 students with the foresight for substantial expansion to serve up to 8,000 day students. This forward-thinking approach laid the groundwork for a dynamic institution capable of evolving with the needs of its diverse student body.

The campus itself, a testament to thoughtful design and community investment, cost $12.2 million to construct, opening its doors to its first cohort in September 1968. Interestingly, Canada College derives its name from the scenic Cañada Road that connects it to the Crystal Springs Reservoir and Woodside, California. The name "Cañada," Spanish for a small canyon or glen, reflects the unique natural beauty surrounding the campus, which was once a ravine now filled with drinking water.
