Cankdeska Cikana Community College (CCCC) stands as a beacon of higher education for the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation, embodying a profound commitment to both academic excellence and the vibrant preservation of Dakota culture and language. The college's rich history traces back to humble beginnings in 1965 with a single class offered in Fort Totten. This program steadily grew under the guidance of tribal governance, leading to the formal establishment of Cankdeska Cikana Community College in the 1970s. Chartered by the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation in 1974, CCCC was founded with a clear mission: to provide essential higher education opportunities to its people, including specialized classes designed to safeguard and promote Dakota culture and language for generations to come.

Academically, CCCC distinguishes itself as one of only seven tribal colleges in the U.S. (as of 2011) to offer a degree specifically related to tribal administration, equipping students with the skills to lead and manage within their communities. Its designation as a land-grant college in 1994 further underscores its commitment to public service, research, and community outreach.
