Cape Fear Community College

Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) stands as a cornerstone of education and workforce development in southeastern North Carolina. Since its founding in 1958, CFCC has been dedicated to equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a dynamic job market and pursue higher education. As a public community college, it serves a diverse student body, offering accessible pathways to academic and career success through a robust array of programs.

The institution began its journey in 1958 as the Wilmington Industrial Education Center (WEIC), initially providing valuable courses for high school students during the day and adults at night. Its early 32,000-square-foot facility, complete with shops, classrooms, and labs, quickly grew to meet regional demand. A pivotal moment came in 1963 when state legislation transformed WEIC into Cape Fear Technical Institute (CFTI), allowing for significant expansion of program offerings with strong local support and new facilities funded by a community bond issue.

By 1988, reflecting its broader mission and expanded educational scope, the institution officially became Cape Fear Community College. This name change underscored its commitment to comprehensive community college offerings, including both technical training and university transfer programs. CFCC continued its growth into the new millennium, opening an additional campus in northern New Hanover County in 2002 to better serve its growing student population of over 14,000. Under the leadership of President Jim Morton, the college continues its mission to provide vital educational resources to the community, building on its history of adaptation and growth.

While the college has received accolades recognizing exceptional faculty, staff, and degree programs, like many institutions, it has also navigated periods of administrative challenges, consistently reaffirming its dedication to student success and community service.
