Capitol Technology University began its journey in 1927 as the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute, a visionary correspondence school founded by Eugene H. Rietzke, a distinguished United States Navy veteran Radioman (Master Chief). This innovative approach brought specialized knowledge directly to aspiring technologists. Just five years later, in 1932, the institution expanded its reach by opening a residence division in Washington, D.C., offering students the invaluable experience of studying in dedicated laboratories and engaging directly with faculty and peers.

The commitment to academic excellence was swiftly recognized. In 1946, following the pivotal era of World War II, the institute earned accreditation from the esteemed Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), now known as ABET, Inc.—a significant mark of quality and rigor. This early accreditation underscores the foundational strength of its academic programs. By 1964, demonstrating an agile response to educational trends, the institute strategically sold its correspondence school division and embraced a new identity, renaming itself the Capitol Institute of Technology, solidifying its focus on residential, immersive education.
