The college boasts a fascinating history, officially founded in 1955. Its very name, Cerritos, pays homage to the historic Rancho Los Cerritos, a local 19th-century landmark. In a truly unique turn of events, the college's establishment even inspired the neighboring city of Dairy Valley to rename itself Cerritos, solidifying the institution's profound connection to the local identity and landscape.

From its initial days in rented classrooms at Excelsior High School in 1956, Cerritos College quickly grew, winning a significant land case in 1957 to secure its own educational site. By 1959, it had proudly moved to its current, expansive campus, becoming a foundational pillar for communities including Artesia, Bellflower, Downey, Norwalk, La Mirada, Hawaiian Gardens, and its namesake city, Cerritos.
