About Chaminade University of Honolulu
Hawaii's Marianist University: Fostering intellect, faith, and service in paradise.
Chaminade University of Honolulu offers a distinctive educational experience rooted in the Marianist tradition, set against the stunning backdrop of Hawaii. Named after Father William Joseph Chaminade, the founder of the Society of Mary, the university upholds a legacy of educating the "whole person," integrating faith, reason, and a strong sense of community service. Prospective students discover an environment where academic excellence is paired with a commitment to individual formation and preparation for meaningful careers.
The university's rich history began with the arrival of Marianist priests in Honolulu in 1883, who first established the renowned Saint Louis School. Recognizing a growing need for higher education among local Hawai'i Catholics, they expanded their mission by opening Saint Louis Junior College in 1955. This foundation quickly evolved; by 1957, it became a four-year institution known as Chaminade College, and further solidified its academic offerings by adding graduate programs in 1977, leading to its current designation as Chaminade University of Honolulu.
At its core, Chaminade's approach to education is guided by five Marianist values: educating for formation in faith, providing an excellent education, fostering a family spirit, educating for service, justice, and peace, and preparing students for adaptation to change. This philosophy ensures that students not only achieve academic success but also develop as compassionate, ethical leaders ready to contribute positively to a dynamic world. Studying at Chaminade means becoming part of a supportive 'ohana' (family) dedicated to personal growth and societal impact.
