The university's history is deeply intertwined with Father William Joseph Chaminade, the resilient French Catholic priest who founded the Society of Mary in 1817. His vision of education as a powerful tool for societal change inspired Marianist missionaries to establish Saint Louis School in Honolulu in 1883. Decades later, with encouragement from alumni, this legacy expanded to higher education, opening Saint Louis Junior College in 1955, which swiftly grew into Chaminade College by 1957 and, with the addition of graduate programs, became Chaminade University of Honolulu in 1977.
