The college's journey began long before its formal establishment in 1969. In 1952, the Salem School District initiated the Salem Technical-Vocational School to offer crucial training for unemployed individuals, starting with essential programs in Nursing and Electronics. This early commitment to practical, career-focused education laid the groundwork for Chemeketa's future. The official college district was formed in 1969, and after a student competition, the significant name "Chemeketa Community College" was adopted, marking a new chapter that officially commenced operations on July 1, 1970.

Chemeketa has consistently prioritized student success and community integration. In the 1990s, it gained recognition as part of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges' Beacon Colleges Initiative, a testament to its dedication to exploring innovative ways to support students. Its deep respect for its heritage was reaffirmed in 2005 when the college received permission from the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and Siletz to continue using the name Chemeketa, celebrating this connection with a special naming ceremony. This commitment extends to resources like the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service, established in 1974, ensuring students have access to essential tools for their academic journey.
