The college's roots trace back to 1952 with the Salem Technical-Vocational School, established to offer crucial training for unemployed individuals in vital fields like Nursing and Electronics. This early commitment to community service and hands-on learning laid the groundwork for Chemeketa Community College, which officially formed its district in 1969 and began operating in July 1970, continually adapting to meet the evolving needs of its students and the workforce.

Chemeketa's dedication to student success is evident throughout its history. In the 1990s, it actively participated in the Beacon Colleges Initiative, a project focused on identifying innovative ways to better support community college students.
