About Christian Brothers University

Pioneering Memphis higher education with a Lasallian legacy.

Founded in 1871 by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Christian Brothers University (CBU) began its journey as Christian Brothers College, deeply rooted in the Catholic tradition established by St. John Baptist de la Salle. This private university, guided by its motto "Virtus et Scientia" (Virtue and Knowledge), holds a significant place in Memphis's educational history, notably awarding the city's first post-secondary degree in 1875, predating many other local institutions.

Evolving from its college roots, the institution was officially renamed Christian Brothers University in June 1990, reflecting its expanded academic offerings and commitment to higher learning. With a student body of 1,772, CBU has historically served as a vital educational pillar in the community, fostering a learning environment inspired by its founding principles.

However, the university has recently navigated a period of considerable challenge. Starting in 2021, CBU faced severe accreditation issues, leading to the placement of its physician's assistant program on probation, with its accreditation entirely denied and the program subsequently closed in 2023. Additionally, the university-wide institutional accreditation was placed on probation. Publicly acknowledging severe financial difficulties in 2023, CBU projected significant deficits, prompting drastic budget cuts, including the elimination of 28 faculty positions and numerous academic programs, such as Chemistry, English, History, and Engineering Physics, by December 2023. Further cuts to faculty and staff positions occurred in November 2024.

Amidst these challenges, Christian Brothers University has demonstrated resilience in its commitment to its educational mission. Full accreditation for its undergraduate education programs was restored in October 2022, and for its graduate education programs in October 2024, signaling important steps toward stabilizing its academic standing and reaffirming its dedication to providing quality education.
