Christian Theological Seminary

Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) stands as a beacon of theological education with a remarkably rich and impactful history, rooted in the progressive ideals of its founders. Established by abolitionists in 1855, CTS began as a vital component of North Western Christian University. This unique origin story sets it apart, underscoring a foundational commitment to social justice and ethical leadership that continues to shape its mission today.

The institution's journey has seen significant evolution. After North Western Christian University transformed into Butler University in 1877, CTS continued its work, eventually becoming a fully freestanding institution in 1958. This pivotal moment cemented its independence, allowing it to chart its own course in shaping future religious leaders and scholars. Throughout its history, CTS has adapted while maintaining its core dedication to rigorous theological inquiry and community engagement.

More recently, in 2017, a strategic collaboration with Butler University led to a reorganization of campus land, where Butler purchased a significant portion of the CTS campus. However, CTS retained approximately 12 acres on the west end of the parcel and secured a remarkable 100-year lease on essential spaces, including parts of the seminary, chapel, library, and counseling building. This arrangement ensures that Christian Theological Seminary remains a vibrant, independent institution, deeply integrated within the energetic environment of the Butler University campus, poised to continue its legacy for generations to come.
