The college's story began in 1888, founded by Meliora Clarkson as an integral part of the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital. Its early years were marked by several relocations, adapting to the hospital's growth, from its original site on Dodge Street to Harney Street and later to 26th and Dewey Streets. Facing financial challenges, the Bishop Clarkson Memorial School of Nursing briefly closed in 1955. However, a significant donation from Peter and Evelyn Kiewit enabled its triumphant re-opening in 1960 with a new dedicated facility, Kiewit Hall, symbolizing a new era of growth and dedication.

Throughout the late 20th century, Clarkson College continued to innovate, securing approval in 1981 for a groundbreaking four-year nursing program in partnership with Bellevue College. This significant milestone was followed by rebranding to Bishop Clarkson College in 1982, and then simply Clarkson College in 1992, coinciding with a strategic move to its current campus at 101 S. 42nd Street. Its deep ties to the medical community were further solidified in 1997 when its hospital affiliate merged to form what is now Nebraska Medicine, ensuring students benefit from ongoing clinical partnerships and real-world experience.
