The college's journey began on July 1, 1965, as the Cleveland County Industrial and Adult Education Center. Its initial offerings, including a Licensed Practical Nurse program and adult basic education, laid the foundation for its commitment to practical, community-focused instruction. Over the years, the institution evolved, first becoming the Cleveland County Industrial Center, then the Cleveland County Technical Institute. In 1969, it established its permanent home on the site of the old county home buildings, which remains its campus today. This evolution culminated in 1980, when it proudly adopted its current name, Cleveland Community College, reflecting its expanded mission and comprehensive offerings.

Today, Cleveland Community College is a proud member of the North Carolina Community College System, holding esteemed accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
