CIA's rich history began in 1882 as the Western Reserve School of Design for Women, evolving over the decades to become co-educational and eventually the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1949. This institution played a role in significant national movements, participating in the WPA Federal Art Project during the Great Depression and adapting its curriculum to include medical drawing and mapmaking during World War II, showcasing its enduring relevance and adaptability through challenging times.

Today, CIA thrives on a unified campus at Euclid Avenue, anchored by the state-of-the-art 80,000-square-foot George Gund Building and the historic Joseph McCullough Center For Visual Arts.
