Founded in 1922, it has evolved significantly from its chiropractic roots to become a leader in health promotion education. Under the leadership of Dr. Carl S. Cleveland, III, the university continues a proud family legacy, focusing on an expanded vision for the future of health education.

The university's origins trace back to 1922 when it was established as the Central College of Chiropractic by the esteemed C. S. and Ruth Cleveland, alongside Perl B. Griffin—all pivotal figures and graduates of Palmer College of Chiropractic. Just two years later, it adopted the enduring name Cleveland Chiropractic College, solidifying its place in the history of chiropractic education. This early foundation set the stage for a century of dedication to specialized health training.

Over the decades, Cleveland University-Kansas City has adapted and grown, including the significant absorption of the Ratledge System of Chiropractic Schools in Los Angeles in 1951, leading to the rechartering of a Los Angeles campus. A strategic merger in 2011 consolidated the Los Angeles and Kansas City campuses into a single, vibrant Overland Park location. In a landmark decision in 2015, the institution broadened its identity, changing its name to Cleveland University-Kansas City.
