Coe College

Coe College, a distinguished private institution founded in 1851, stands as a testament to enduring educational values and a pioneering spirit. The college's compelling history began with the vision of Rev. Williston Jones, who established the "School for the Prophets." However, it was the transformative gift from farmer Daniel Coe that truly shaped its future. Coe's generous $1,500 donation came with the vital stipulation that the college must educate both men and women. True to this progressive spirit, the institution opened in 1853 as the "Cedar Rapids Collegiate Institute," making it a co-educational pioneer in higher learning. Over the decades, the college evolved, becoming the "Coe College Institute" in 1875 before officially establishing itself as "Coe College" in 1881, thanks to further private support.
