College of Our Lady of the Elms, affectionately known as Elms College, stands as a testament to educational evolution and unwavering community commitment. The college's inspiring journey began in 1897 with the Academy of Our Lady of the Elms. Officially chartered in 1928 as a women's liberal arts college with a specialization in education, it played a crucial role in expanding higher education opportunities for women in Massachusetts. Through the dedication of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Springfield diocesan clergy, the curriculum rapidly diversified, laying the groundwork for the inclusive institution it is today. A pivotal moment came in 1997 when the board of trustees voted to become co-educational, welcoming male students starting in the 1998-1999 school year and marking a new chapter in its legacy of progress.
